An injured man who is identified to be Vijay Sethupathi in the Tamil film Maharaja

What is even a thriller if it does not have you at the edge of your seat, wide awake at 3 in the morning? Yet, Maharaja goes out of the way to provide something that does not end up being just a thriller. A touch of sentimentality and sensitivity is what gives a work of fiction, the human touch. To bring out the effect of the human touch, the film introduces a plot that is bound to shake even the most brave hearts.

The team behind it all: Maharaja’s inception

Interestingly, the initial news about the film was officially announced in February 2023 under the tentative title VJS50, commemorating Sethupathi’s 50th film as the lead actor. The powerful script was directed by Nithilan Swaminathan, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Raam Murali. Vijay Sethupathi, being a prominent actor in the Tamil film industry, is quite well known for his versatile roles and has gained significant popularity for his performances in various critically acclaimed films.

For Nithilan who made his directorial debut with the film “Kurangu Bommai” in 2017, it was imminent to live up to his name as his debut was very well received for its storytelling capacity and engaging screenplay. Pairing up with Vijay Sethupathi, also known for his choice of unique and powerful scripts, alongside co-writer Raam Murali, the compelling storyline is already a staircase closer to being considered a legendary film. Maharaja is currently the highest-grossing Tamil film of 2024.

The protagonist in the film Maharaja

A delve into Maharaja’s concept

When does a man become a real father? Is it enough just to be biologically related? It is very rare for a film labelled as a thriller to delve into such deep aspects that rattle the brain chemistry of the viewer. Patiently enough, the movie proves that for every mindless thriller that focuses only on the action, there will be one that dives into the emotional.

A sort of poetic justice is definitely served by the end of the movie, when the protagonist stands triumphant over his perpetrators. The use of a small device to hide, in plain sight, the premise of a much bigger secret is appropriately explored in the film. Leaving the audience guessing ,” Who is this Lakshmi?” until the very climax, the build makes for a fitting catastrophe that ensues, ultimately leading to the victory of the good.

Discovering films of this rare calibre is a treasure hunt in itself, so seize the moment and join the cinematic journey that awaits!
