A still from Kaavaalaa, showing Tamannah and Rajnikanth

A Rajnikanth film isn’t complete without a foot-tapping hit song. Kaavaalaa set the bar high. For Jailer, a film centred around comedy and action, it became a quickly popular jam.

Upon its release, Kaavaalaa received an enthusiastic reception, quickly garnering attention on social media and streaming platforms. With Rajnikanth and Tamannah bringing forward their A-game for the release, it is hard to ignore its singular influence on the collective success of the film as well. The initial exuberance of the song contributed towards a strong performance across digital platforms, with an impressive number of plays and shares within just the first week of its launch. Furthermore, an added number of inclusion in various playlists and its performance on popular music charts indicates a strong impact on the music scene, paving the way for much needed discussions about its lasting influence and success!

The whole idea: Why is Kaavaalaa so catchy?

With over 200 million views on YouTube, the song is the penultimate treatise on beat synchronicity. What makes it expertly sonorous is its ability to lend towards the category of good music. And good music is not just made any way, right? Composer Anirudh Ravichander recognized Shilpa Rao’s vocal prowess as the ideal fit for the song. The ship set off during the end of March 2023, when Anirudh had recorded the female portions for the song Chaleya with the artist at a jam session in his own studio.

Anirudh aimed to give the song a unique linguistic twist, as if a non-native Telugu speaker had penned the lyrics. And with Arunraja Kamaraj’s participation, it turned into a dream project. Kamaraj sought out as many catchphrases as he could, but ultimately stuck with “Kaavaalaa” and it eventually became the hook line of the track!

Reception and more music magic!

According to YouTube Trends, the video song of the film was immediately, the 6th most-viewed music video of 2023. It was also one of the ten-most searched regional songs scoured on Amazon Alexa. The chart-topper also became a viral social media trend, featuring the likes of artists such as Vijay Varma, and Ragini Dwivedi. The persistent flute refrain was so popular, even non-fans couldn’t ignore it.

In one interview, lyricist Kamaraj revealed a key detail: “Here though, the song was written only for Tamannaah. So, I approached the lyrics without the ‘Rajini’ filter but was surprised to see him being a part of the song.” No wonder, just a hint of the superstar, and the song achieved peak success. Maximum aura points for the Thalaiva!
