It has been an impressive year for South Indian movies. Consistently, thrillers have been making bank at the Box Office, but there are still quite a lot in line waiting for their time to shine. So is Sujeeth’s OG.

OG: Content and Approach

It feels like the filmmakers have gone for the Gen Z approach, with the extended title of the film being They Call Him OG. Well, whatever expectations you had, you are in luck as it is Bollywood superstar Emraan Hashmi’s Telegu debut! Officially announced in December 2022, the Gangster thriller was initially gearing up for a 2024 release, but delay in productions pushed off the date to 2025. But you don’t have to hold your horses. With only 2 months left to 2024, it is only a matter of time till we get to see Hashmi in a brand new avatar.

Creating another exciting lore around a gangster named Ojas Gambheera, the initials OG also become significant in the grand scheme of things. Considering it is actor Pawan Kalyan filling in for the titular protagonist, Hashmi will be seen putting his villainous prowess to good use in the character of Omi Bhau. But director Sujeeth is no low baller. Featuring a reported production budget of ₹250 crore, the project was funded by D. V. V. Danayya’s DVV Entertainment.

Take it from the supporting ensemble:  Arjun Das, Sriya Reddy, Harish Uthaman and Prakash Raj are all cast in the film, ready to take over the audience with their evergreen charm! Neither does it fall behind in the music department. Already gathering a crazy number of views, the track “Hungry Cheetah” was released on 3rd September 2023.

Expectations vs. Reality? Who wins?

A mob boss vanishes for half a decade, only to reappear and seek revenge on common foes. The plot summary for the movie is nothing we haven’t seen before. That makes it even more exciting as what matters now is the form of representation. To represent a recurring plot in an entirely different way is expected from the Telegu film industry, and with all those recourses, we will be counting on OG‘s success.

In spite of all these expectations, in a world where cinematic disappointments are more common than plot holes in a soap opera, OG stands on the precipice of audience reception. Set your countdown timers for its release because one way or another, OG is set up for a grand release that might make or break its appeal.
