Once a delicacy meant for the elite, the quiet acceptance of filter coffee as an everyday indulgence and its wide accessiblity has been a blessing in plain sight! Though it’s hard to conceive of a classic morning dosa without a steaming cup of the cherished ‘kaapi,’ its origins remain a subject of friendly debate.

The debate arises from the smuggled beans brought back by Baba Budan from his Mecca pilgrimage. While some agree that its recent popularity has been a result of years of silent marketing, a 17th Century timeframe seems way too out of context for the conception of the mordernized version. Yet, what can be the cause of its overnight fame among the Millennials and Gen Z? Almost anyone can immediately think of the one youtube channel whose handle is in itself a play on the name (yes, it is unmistakeably FilterCopy).

All jokes apart, we can still agree that quite a lot of BuzzFeed India reviews were watched to choose the perfect outlet for the initial pick-me-up. And with an imminent rise of coffee houses and cafes all across the country, the choice of variety became a veritable turning point that shot up its allure.

The unique taste of the South Indian filter coffee can be attributed to the inclusion of Chicory, a plant closely related to the dandelion. Though, even if we leave the whole “technical” aspect aside, almost the whole appeal of the drink lies in its performative quota that can be well noticed at any local joint. The smooth transfer from tumbler to dabra and back to the tumbler in order to enhance the taste, paves way for the essential visual of the prep. For adults, it’s a fascinating game that provides a satisfying, if illusory, sense of productivity. In a way, this form of aeration naturally enhances the flavour of the coffee without affecting its taste.

Still too tired to go out for a grab? Worry not! Surprisingly enough, you can now enjoy a quick cup of filter coffee right at home as quite a number of brands are coming up with instant premixes that guarantee the evident familiar taste in every sip. Quite hassle free right?

While a sudden dip in its popularity is certainly not anticipated, get a hold of your friend and visit your nearest cafe to keep the Parampara, Pratishtha, and Anushasan scores high. In filter coffee we trust!
